A hammam is not a sauna. It is a ritual in three stages, and each one matters. Steam first, about fifteen minutes, until the skin opens. Then beldi soap, a black-olive paste left to rest. Finally the kessa scrub, a coarse glove that lifts dead skin away in visible strips.
At Beniss the steam room is cleaned between each guest and the water runs continuously. The beldi soap and argan oil come from Moroccan cooperatives, with no additives.
Allow an hour. You leave with smooth skin and slightly light-headed, and you need to drink plenty of water. That is normal, and it is the sign the ritual did its work.
